Rally for The Right To Know: NYC Democratic Socialists of America demand NYPD accountability

New York, NY - On August 24, 2017 in front of the Council offices at 250 Broadway in Lower Manhattan, NYC Democratic Socialists of America and their allies ralled for The Right to Know Act and to demand NYPD accountability. The Right to Know Act is ONE co-sponsor away from a veto proof majority in the City Council. Democrats under the leadership of Mayor de Blasio and Speaker Mark-Viverito, refuse to bring this essential piece of police reform up for a vote.

The New York City Democratic Socialists of America announced over 1,000 petition signatures to the City Council in support of the Right to Know Act. The legislative package is supported by a majority of New York City Council members and hundreds of organizations from across the city, yet has still not been passed by the city’s legislature. The 2 pieces of common-sense legislation would advance accountability and transparency within thy NYPD to protect civilians’ rights.

>>CLICK HERE TO SEE MORE PHOTOS<<

With all 51 City Council seats up for election, the act provides an easy line in the sand for voters to see where their Council Members stand in the fight to protect New Yorkers’ rights. NYC DSA has been collecting signatures primarily in the districts of Council Members Alan Maisel and Costa Constantinides, who have yet to endorse the act despite enthusiastic support for it by their constituents.

“The signatures we’ve collected show that their voters want these simple protections.” said Canarsie resident Caress Villegas-Hickson. “At the end of the day, it’s a question of what they care about. So far it hasn’t been us.”

In addition to support from a majority of City Council members and hundreds of community groups, the act’s policies were endorsed as best-practices by President Obama’s law-enforcement led White House Task Force on 21st Century Policing. The current administration’s use of executive action and rhetoric to enable abusive policing that targets people of color makes local action more important than ever.  Yet the delays in City Council action are leaving New Yorkers without protection and vulnerable to police abuses that can be prevented by the Right to Know Act.

Bianca Cunningham, one of the group's leaders, noted “vigils and protests aren’t enough. We need to change the law - and we need to do it now.”

City Hall, NYC - Young people who are currently or formerly experiencing homelessness gathered on the steps of City Hall on August 24th , 2017; to urge Mayor de Blasio, the City Council, and the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) to extend the age that homeless youth can receive housing in residential programs funded by DYCD up to the age of 25. Advocates for the homeless and service providers articulated the various needs and experiences of their clients in an effort to combat the city’s homelessness crisis impacting youth--in particular, LGBTQ, gender-non conforming, and non-binary youth of color.

Participants included: Youth experiencing homelessness, Queerocracy, VOCAL-NY, ACT-UP NY, Ali Forney Center, Coalition for Homeless Youth, Diaspora Community Services, GMHC, New Alternatives for LGBT Youth, Theater of the Oppressed-NYC, Princess Janae Place, and other impacted organizations.

New York State has recently enacted legislation to extend the age in NYS-licensed homeless youth housing programs until age 25. The federal efforts to end youth homelessness through HUD and the Interagency Council of Homelessness also define youth homelessness as lasting until the age of 25. DYCD was given the option to expand the age for youth housing to 25, but has not done so.

Back in April of 2017, youth experiencing homelessness and advocates implored the city to extend the age on #40toNoneDay, a national day of awareness to end LGBTQ youth homelessness.

Brooklyn, NY - The family of the late Erickson Brito and attorney Sanford Rubenstein addressed the press on August 22, 2017; after meeting Brooklyn District Attorney, Eric Gonzalez, to be briefed on the criminal investigation being conducted by the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office with regard to the killing of Erickson Brito by an NYPD officer in the hallway at his apartment building on 362 Sutter Avenue, Brooklyn.

Osiris Gomez, father of Erickson Brito declared the meeting with Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez was satisfactory, they were treated very respectfully and he is confident they will help them find the justice they are hoping for.

Attorney Sanford Rubenstein said: "Very solemn meeting between Brooklyn District Attorney and high ranking members of his staff with members of Erickson Brito's family and their attorney. Brooklyn District Attorney committed that he would do his best to get to the bottom of what happened. He advised the family that the autopsy report just arrived in his office actually this morning; and that after they reviewed the autopsy report and finished their investigation which is still under way they will have another meeting with the family to advise them what are the results of the investigation. The father made it very clear that he felt that his son does not deserve to die that way and that he wants justice for his son; that his son should not have been killed the way he was, shot in the face. And that when they finish their investigation he wants to know why his son was killed that way. We have confidence that the district attorney here in Brooklyn will complete their investigation and ultimately do justice in this matter."

NYPD Don't Kill Our Mentally Ill March: Brooklyn mourns mentally ill man killed by NYPD

Brooklyn, NY - Over a hundred people gathered in front of the home of recent NYPD victim Dwayne Juene in Flatbush, Brooklyn, on August 19, 2017; to protest the killing of the mentally ill by NYPD. After a brief press conference, relatives of victims and advocacy groups led a march to the 67th Precinct where Officer Miguel Gonzalez is based.

"Currently, only 13% of the NYPD's uniformed officers are trained to deal with people with mental illness. This is absolutely and unambiguously unacceptable. Black Lives Matter Greater NY has advocated for too many of these victims. It is time that Mayor DeBlasio and Commissioner O'Neil paid attention to this problem. I have looked into the eyes of the victims families as they wonder why this happened. The answer is that New York City and America as a whole doesn't care enough to end these killings." Said Hawk Newsome, President, Black Lives Matter Greater New York.

>>CLICK HERE TO SEE MORE PHOTOS<<

Dwayne Jeune, 32, a man whose mother called the police to report that he was acting erratically was fatally shot last Monday by one of the police officers who responded to the family’s apartment in Brooklyn.

Officer Miguel Gonzalez of the 67th Precinct was identified by law-enforcement sources as the cop who fatally fired five shots at Dwayne Jeune.

Gonzalez also shot and wounded another mentally ill man under similar circumstances last year, Davonte Pressley was shot three times in the torso by Gonzalez outside a coin laundry in East Flatbush.

>>CLICK HERE TO SEE MORE PHOTOS<<

Police sources said officers were called to the home and found Jeune to be combative and threatening. Officers tried to use a Taser on him twice, but it didn’t work. That’s when police say Jeune pushed an officer to the ground and stood over him with a carving knife, prompting Officer Miguel Gonzalez to open fire.

"Over the last eight months my law firm, Rubenstein & Rynecki, has been retained to represent 4 families who have lost mentally ill loved ones who were killed by the NYPD. These killings must stop! We need all NYPD officers to learn how to interface with the NYPD mentally ill. A task force is needed to improve protocol in these situation and Gov. Cuomo needs to extend his executive order involving unarmed civilians killed by the police to give the Attorney General Jurisdiction to prosecute police officers if a crime was committed by the police in killing a mentally ill person." Said Attorney Sanford Rubenstein.

The family and elected officials are calling on the NYPD to reevaluate how officers handle the mentally ill. While some of the officers dispatched that day were specially trained, the officer who fired his weapon was not.

New York, NY - On the fifth anniversary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, the New York Immigration Coalition will join its partners and immigrant New Yorkers to demand an end to discriminatory attacks on undocumented immigrant communities. Immigration advocates rally near Trump Tower on August 15, 2017; to demand Administration uphold programs that protect 1.2 million people from deportation

DACA and TPS are under attack, unprecedentedly and publicly putting immigrant communities under attack.

More than 800,000 young people may lose protection from deportation due to a demand made by ten attorneys general in June. Neither the White House nor the Justice Department have said whether they’ll defend the DACA program that’s set to be challenged in court unless the administration rescinds it by Sept. 5.

Temporary Protected Status (TPS) has provided over 350,000 people relief from countries experiencing humanitarian crises by granting them work permits and allowing them to live in the United States without the threat of deportation. The Department of Homeland Security has not said for certain that they will continue the program.

As Trump visits NYC, concerned residents demand Trump and the GOP stop risking nuclear war and stop implicitly encouraging the spread of racism

New York, NY — In disbelief that an unhinged president is risking life as we know it and a complicit Republican party is doing nothing to stop it, tri-state area residents chant, shout, and march in protest, doing everything in their power to keep the country and the world safe.

In the wake of the horrific events of the past week, Activists took to the streets after Trump stokes fears with careless words and tactics. Members of Rise and Resist and concerned residents, organized a march on August 14, 2017; from the main branch of the New York Public Library to the Trump International Hotel near Columbus Circle with signs conveying simple messages to Trump and the GOP – no war, deescalate immediately, and be proactive in ending racism in the U.S.

"I think Americans don't think something this dangerous could be happening in this country, but it is," said Martin Quinn, Queens resident and new activist. "We have a racist president, a party turning the other cheek, and an administration risking nuclear war through incompetence and bravado."

“I march because of the reckless abandon this president displays in his rhetoric about North Korea,” said Marilyn Oliva, a member of Rise and Resist. “He’s a schoolyard bully with zero sense of diplomacy and tact. His words and those of others in his government threaten the stability of the world.”

“In the wake of all this dangerous saber-rattling by the Republican party, I feel it’s my duty to march and demand the hostile threats of war stop now,” said Maryellen Novak, co-organizer of Monday’s action. “I’ll not only be in the streets, but do everything I can to oust this treacherous president, his cronies, and the party from office.”

Rise and Resist is a direct action group made of new and experienced activists committed to opposing, disrupting, and defeating any government act that threatens democracy, equality, and our civil liberties. Previous Rise and Resist actions include a Trump Tower protest against the administration's immigration policy where 26 members were arrested, and a “cough-in” at Jean-Georges restaurant at Trump Tower to protest the potential repeal of the ACA.

Indigenous Leaders, Activists at Goldman Sachs Pipeline Finance Conference Protest Giant Bank’s Oil and Gas Pipeline Investments and Links to Trump

New York, NY - On August 10, 2017; over 100 activists from indigenous, environmental and community groups held a protest outside Goldman Sachs headquarters in New York, as the bank hosts a private finance conference for oil, gas, and pipeline corporations. A 40-foot wide, 7-foot tall set of interlocking panels forming a large mural was held in front of the doors blocking the entrance to the building, resulting on 5 arrests..

>>CLICK HERE TO SEE MORE PHOTOS<<

Indigenous leaders and activists from the American Indian Community House, New York Communities for Change, Food & Water Watch, People’s Climate Movement – NY, Greenpeace, and the Sane Energy Project were protesting the banks’ financing of fossil fuel projects such as Dakota Access that destroy water and air quality and cause climate change, as well as the bank’s close ties to the Trump administration and violations of the sovereignty of Native American Nations and people.

Wall Street’s giant bank held a conference for the pipeline and fossil fuel corporations that seek to rip through indigenous communities; destroy our water and air quality; and fuel the climate crisis.

>>CLICK HERE TO SEE MORE PHOTOS<<

At this elite, private conference, Goldman will bring these corporations into one place to network with big investors and get financing for oil and gas projects such as Dakota Access, Pilgrim, KeystoneXL and other tar sands pipelines.

The focus of the action was to tell Goldman Sachs to stop financing oil, gas, coal, and pipelines and expose the banks control over Trump and the federal government.

The activists also urge New York Governor Andrew Cuomo to reject all fracking infrastructure projects, such as the Pilgrim Pipelines, which are also opposed by indigenous communities.

New Yorkers Arrested at Senator Schumer’s Office as Trump’s FERC Nominee Advances

PLEASE CONSIDER SUPPORTING MY WORK

Washington, DC - Senate Minority Leader and New York Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer’s Washington, DC office was rendered inoperable on August 3, 2017 morning when nearly two dozen people blockaded the office doors, delivering a letter backed by 15,000 supporters demanding that the Senator oppose Trump’s nominations to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and the Energy and Natural Resources Act of 2017 (S 1460). Hailing from New York, Massachusetts, South Carolina, and Virginia, and representing a coalition of over 190 groups pledged to fight Trump’s FERC nominees, seven individuals held up a banner and were arrested for refusing to move. The banner read “Senator Schumer: Don’t Trump Our Future. Vote no on FERC Nominees. Vote No on Energy Bill S1460.”

>>CLICK HERE TO SEE MORE PHOTOS<<

These arrests happened only hours after Trump officially nominated Democrat Richard Glick, an energy aid to Senator Maria Cantwell, to FERC. Richard Glick will now have to pass through the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources before coming up for a confirmation vote by the full Senate. Republican FERC nominees Neil Chatterjee and Robert Powelson have already made it through the committee and are up for a full Senate vote soon. Powelson and Chatterjee need to be approved before FERC has the quorum it needs to approve fossil fuel infrastructure projects.

Senators on both sides of the aisle have shown little to no opposition to Trump’s FERC nominees. Because FERC has lacked a quorum since February, Bloomberg reports that $14 billion worth of infrastructure projects are being held up, worrying investors. This includes Dominion’s proposed $5.5 billion Atlantic Coast Pipeline, and the Nexus pipeline, a $2.1 billion joint project from DTE Energy Co. and an Enbridge subsidiary.

Those opposed to Trump’s nominations to FERC point out FERC’s utter disregard for communities and the climate. FERC regulates the electricity market and is responsible for rubber stamping fossil fuel infrastructure such as fracked gas pipelines, compressor stations, and LNG export terminals. Climate protectors, individuals, and groups from around the country are demanding that the Senate reject Trump’s FERC nominees until FERC’s abuses of power and law are investigated, and steps are taken to replace FERC with an agency dedicated to a just transition off fossil fuels.

>>CLICK HERE TO SEE MORE PHOTOS<<

“Concerned New Yorkers have been focused on Senator Schumer standing up to FERC since 2015 when they approved the Spectra Pipeline adjacent to Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant,” states blockader Kim Fraczek, Director of Sane Energy Project, based in Brooklyn, NY, where Senator Schumer also lives. "We were pleased when the Senator met our demand to request FERC issue a Stop Work Order for the harmful and undemocratic pipeline. FERC denied his request to protect 20 million of his constituents. It’s clear to us that Senator Schumer understands the peril FERC facilitates, and why it is necessary to block Trump’s nominees, Chatterjee and Powelson, whom we expect to fast-track further detriment to our health, safety and democracy.”

"The Democrats seem to enjoy talking about climate change to media and at public events to their constituents. But talk is different than action,” said Jess Rechtschaffer of New York, who was arrested when she refused to stop blocking the office doorway. “Chuck Schumer, along with the majority of the Democratic Party, have been enabling the fossil fuel industry for years, at the expense of public health and safety for decades now.”

Deborah Kushner was also arrested blocking Schumer’s office. Deborah is from Nelson County, Virginia, a battleground between local residents and Dominion Power's proposed Atlantic Coast pipeline. “Everything is wrong in this scenario,” she said. “Taxpaying property owners faced with eminent domain seizure of their land by a for-profit company, wondering about our home's proximity to an "incineration zone," finding huge gaps and incorrect data in FERC'S Environmental Impact Statement, seeing property values plummet before work starts. FERC must be stopped in its tracks and turned 180 degrees around so that we can continue to live and breathe in peace.”

>>CLICK HERE TO SEE MORE PHOTOS<<

Drew Hudson of South Carolina, an organizer with Beyond Extreme Energy and founder of 198 Methods, said he participated in the blockade because he wanted to “demand Chuck Schumer and other Senators who claim to care about the climate to put up or shut up. You can't claim to care about the climate and the Paris accords if you vote for FERC, fracking and fossil fuel exports."

The FERC Vacancies Campaign has been working for months to fight Trump’s FERC nominations. They have sponsored national lobby days, call-in days, district office visits, and disruptions to pressure senators into voting no on Trump’s nominees. They pledge that the resistance will continue to the end, and that there will be political consequences for Schumer and anyone else if they vote in FERC’s favor by approving either Trump’s FERC nominees or the upcoming energy bill.

“Taken From Us”: Immigrants and Activists to Protest JPMorgan Chase Nationwide Across the Country for Financing the Immigrant Detention of Family Members and Backing Trump

NEW YORK — On August 2, 2017; hundreds of immigrants and allies in New York City protested outside JPMorgan Chase offices, calling on its complicity in Trump’s anti-immigrant agenda, particularly through its financing of private immigrant detention centers run by the GEO Group and CoreCivic. The “Taken From Us” protest featured powerful visual illustrations of the families separated by private immigrant detention centers, with empty pairs of shoes collected and displayed to symbolize missing relatives, friends, and loved ones.

Marches and rallies were held outside of the corporate headquarters of JPMorgan Chase in New York City, and other JPMorgan Chase locations around the country, including New Jersey, Connecticut, and North Carolina. Organizations behind these actions include Make the Road, Center for Popular Democracy and SumOfUs.

JPMorgan Chase is one of the companies exposed by the recently launched “Corporate Backers of Hate” campaign, which has exposed how nine major corporations stand to profit off Trump’s anti-immigrant, -Muslim, -refugee, and worker agenda and, in many cases, are cozying up to the Trump administration.

Earlier this spring, more than 500 New Yorkers marched against JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo, with 12 facing arrest after participating in a civil disobedience at the JPMorgan Chase headquarters. Hundreds also marched to the company’s annual shareholder meeting and confronted CEO Jamie Dimon for his company’s financing of private immigrant detention and his role on Trump’s Business Council. Local and state lawmakers in New York, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, and TK have also expressed concern to the company and vowed to explore legislative action.  And thousands of people across the country have written to Jamie Dimon and the company’s Board to echo the campaign’s demands via the Corporate Backers of Hate website.

Activists protest inside Trump Tower to declare ‘The President Is Not Above the Law’ calling on Trump to let Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation proceed

PLEASE CONSIDER SUPPORTING MY WORK

New York City - New and experienced activists demonstrated inside the Trump Tower atrium on August 1, 2017; to voice their objection in response to reports that Donald Trump is considering firing Special Counsel Robert Mueller and to pardon administration members who have broken the law.

Members of Rise and Resist, a NYC-based direct action group, carried signs stating ‘You can’t fire the truth’, ’No pardons for kleptocrats’, and ‘Hands off Mueller’ while chanting inside the Trump property and distributed leaflets conveying a simple, direct message - Trump cannot be allowed to obstruct justice.

“The situation is all too reminiscent of the Saturday Night Massacre and Nixon’s firing of Archibald Cox,” said Rise and Resist member Donna Gould. “I’m here protesting because I want to sound a wake-up call to help prevent a constitutional crisis.”

“I fear the president is trying to do an end run around the judicial system, and I’m very afraid that he’s going to get rid of Mueller by dealing dark and dirty,” said Jonathan Walker, a member of Rise and Resist.

Rise and Resist formed in response to the 2016 US election, and is committed to opposing, disrupting, and defeating any government act that threatens democracy, equality, and our civil liberties. Previous Rise and Resist actions include a "cough-in" at Jean-Georges restaurant, a Federal Plaza rally decrying Medicaid cuts, and a protest against Trump's abbreviated visit to New York City in May.
