NOW-NYC Protests 94th Precinct: Every Rape Must be Taken Seriously Organization Issues List of Demands for NYPD

New York — The National Organization for Women-NYC denounced comments made by NYPD Captain Peter Rose, trivializing rape cases in which the perpetrator‘s identity is known to the victim. In response, NOW-NYC organized a protest outside of the 94th Precinct held at 1pm on January 10th to call for all rapes to be taken seriously and to issue a series of demands to the NYPD.

Sonia Ossorio, President of NOW New York said, “Captain Rose’s comments are outrageous, but they are symptoms of a larger problem. The atrocious idea that acquaintance rapes are less serious is a widespread belief in our criminal justice system. It is a prejudice that stands between countless sexual assault victims and justice.”

In support of victims across the City of New York, NOW-NYC demands:

- All 10 “unsolved” cases from the 94th precinct to be reopened. The victims should be contacted by someone whose mandate is to secure victim cooperation and pursue justice.

- A thorough evaluation to identify where things went wrong in these 10 cases.

- Arrest numbers and incident reports from other commands to be compiled, to identify whether this egregious O-for-10 statistic in the 94th precinct is an anomaly or the norm.

- A department-wide plan that evaluates current procedures and imposes oversight and accountability in every command to ensure that acquaintance rapes are taken seriously.

- A department-wide commitment to 2 principles:
1_ Acquaintance rapes are real rapes: in fact, these constitute a majority of rapes committed.
2_ Starr by believing victims: ensure investigators understand that most rape complaints are true and that complaining witnesses should get respectful treatment and prompt, thorough investigations.

Although Captain Rose has since issued an apology on Twitter, his comments rang alarm bells for how victims of rape are treated by the NYPD. Through its work the organization is aware of at least several instances in which NYPD officers did not respond adequately or sensitively to the immediate and pressing needs of a rape victim.

Jane Manning, Director of Advocacy for NOW-NYC's partner organization, Women's Justice NOW said, “It’s good that he apologized but an apology doesn’t fix the problem. We hear all the time that police want victims to come forward and report rape but how are victims going to feel confident that they can report a rape and have it taken seriously when they hear comments like this coming from the commanding officer of a police department‘? Are these alarming statistics on the 94th precinct an anomaly or are they systematic of a larger problem that’s city-wide? This is what we plan to find out.”

Hundreds gathered in front of Senator Charles Schumer’s residence just off Grand Army Plaza to protest Trump’s ‘Climate Denial Cabinet’

Brooklyn, NY – Today, hundreds of people joined a rally in Brooklyn as part of a nationwide day of action directed at Senators across the nation. 350Brooklyn, the local affiliate of the international climate group 350.org, organized the Brooklyn event.

Gathering in front of Senator Charles Schumer’s residence just off Grand Army Plaza, Brooklynites demanded that the new Senate Minority Leader use his position to strongly oppose President-elect Trump’s nomination of climate deniers to positions of great power over energy and the environment.

Brooklynites carried signs and chanted slogans urging Schumer to hang tough, in particular. against four of Trump’s climate denying nominees: Rex Tillerson, the ExxonMobil CEO nominated for Secretary of State; Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt, nominated to head the Environmental Protection Agency; Ryan Zinke, Montana’s sole member of the House of Representatives, nominated to be Secretary of the Interior, and former Texas governor Rick Perry, Trump’s nominee for Energy Secretary.
At the rally, Brooklynites were loud and clear about the reasons for their opposition to these nominees.

“Chuck Schumer must lead the charge in Congress against Donald Trump’s extreme anti-environmental agenda,” says Eric Weltman, senior organizer with Food & Water Watch. “Our future depends on Schumer’s willingness to stand in the way of Trump’s corporate takeover of our government. The safety of our communities and environment hinges on Schumer speaking out against the fossil fuel CEOs and climate change deniers Trump wants to put in charge.”

“We’re doing this for our children and their children,” says 350Brooklyn co-coordinator Sara Gronim. “We don’t have four years to go backward on this. Climate change is real and it’s happening fast. Hurricane Sandy was a real hardship for Brooklyn, and sea level rise is a growing threat to many of our neighborhoods.”

“At the very moment when the window is closing on our ability to reverse the most devastating effects of climate change, the Trump Administration is appointing cabinet members who don't even believe that human civilization has anything to do with it. This is like still believing that the world is flat,” says Jon Forster, founder of the DC37 Climate Justice Committee. “Yet, in transitioning now to a clean, green economy, we have the opportunity to create millions of good jobs, avoid the astronomical costs of trying to fight increasingly violent floods, heat waves, and infestations, and protect hundreds of millions of people from climate driven social upheaval and conflict.”

Climate Activists Call on Senators Schumer and Gillibrand to Defeat Climate Deniers Nominated for Trump’s Cabinet

Dozens of climate activists rallied today in NYC at the offices of Senators Schumer and Gillibrand to urge them to vote against the various climate deniers that have been nominated to serve in key environmental positions in Donald Trump’s cabinet. The protestors handed letters and petitions to representatives of the two senators. As the Senate Majority Leader, Senator Schumer’s opposition is especially critical. Meanwhile, Senator Gillibrand serves on the Senate’s Committee on Environment and Public Works.

Similar protests were coordinated by 350.org in each of the 50 states. Protests are also planned at Senator Schumer’s home in Brooklyn and at the State Capitol in Albany.

During his campaign, Donald Trump repeatedly claimed he would attempt to “drain the swamp” of Washington, DC. Since the election, however, he has appointed climate deniers to every single cabinet position pertaining to energy and environment. Throughout the country, people are urging Senators to stand up to Trump’s “Climate Denial Cabinet”.

“Instead of draining the swamp, Trump wants to turn over the keys of the nation over to long-time swamp dwellers. The window to prevent climate catastrophe is rapidly closing and humanity will not survive the climate deniers that Trump has put forth. We need all Senators to put the interests of future generations ahead of partisan concerns,” said Mark Dunlea of 350NYC.

“We join with hundreds of thousands of others calling for unyielding opposition to all of Trump’s cabinet picks, but we especially demand that you vociferously oppose these four nominees who, together with Trump himself, represent a devastating threat to the climate and the environment. As Minority Leader, Senator Schumer must do everything he can to ensure a full and transparent vetting of each nominee’s tax returns, potential conflicts of interest, qualifications, and position regarding climate change and the environment generally,” said Dee Aherne of 350NYC.

>>CLICK HERE TO SEE MORE PHOTOS<<

The four nominees being targeted for defeat are:

●     Tillerson (State): Rex Tillerson, who has no previous government experience, is the longtime CEO of Exxon Mobil, the wealthiest corporation in the world and perhaps the single most significant driver of humanity’s headlong rush towards climate chaos. Tillerson’s appointment will undoubtedly mean that the aggressive promotion of fossil-fuel infrastructure and consumption will become the official foreign policy of the United States, at a time when we should instead take a leadership role in the development and spread of green, renewable energy technology. Aside from this, Tillerson’s far-flung conflicts of interest, including his company’s extensive ties to Russia and to Vladimir Putin, alone are enough to disqualify him for State.

●     Pruitt (EPA): Scott Pruitt is a climate-change denier who, as Oklahoma’s Attorney General, is currently suing the EPA over President Obama’s Clean Energy Plan. Pruitt is nestled deep in the pocket of the fossil fuel industry, and would like nothing better than to dismantle the agency’s many achievements and strip it of its regulatory power, all in the name of states’ (read corporate) rights.

●     Perry (Energy): Rick Perry, the ex-governor of Texas, wants to dismantle the very cabinet department he has been tapped to head, apparently unaware or not caring that it is not only responsible for energy policy, but also for wide-ranging scientific research and the management of our nuclear arsenal. Perry is another climate-change denier, and sits on boards of Energy Transfer Partners and Sunoco, two companies involved in the controversial Dakota Access Pipeline.

●     Zinke (Interior): Ryan Zinke is a one-term Representative from Montana, one of the top coal-producing states. Most of that coal is mined from land owned by the federal government and managed by the Department of the Interior. Under President Obama, the Department imposed a moratorium on new mining leases. Zinke, however, has been a vocal opponent of that ban, and also wants to expedite oil and gas drilling on federal lands. When running for Congress in 2014, he said that climate change is “not proven science.”

As New York’s residents know all too well after Hurricane Sandy in 2012, climate-related weather events and change can and will have a direct impact on their lives. The positions of its Senators make them particularly important in the ongoing fight for climate change justice, and today’s rally demonstrated how many New Yorkers already understand that action to block Trump’s cabinet picks is imperative. However, there is much more work to be done. We must take a stand – one that spreads the word about climate change and speaks up against those who deny its existence.

The wide range of groups calling upon the NY Senators to reject these nominees include: 350NYC; All Our Energy; Bronx Climate Justice North; Center for Earth Ethics;  Citizens' Environmental Coalition;  Climate Justice @ Union Theological Seminary; Code Pink NY; Compressor Free Franklin; Enfield Neighbors for Safe Air and Water; Environmental Justice Task Force of the WNY Peace Center; Food and Water Watch;  Gas Free Seneca; Green Education and Legal Fund; International Indian Treaty Council Climate Action Network, NY; Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York (NOFA-NY); People's Climate Movement NY; Rochester People's Climate Coalition; RochesterEnvironment.com; and Seneca lake Guardian, a Waterkeeper Affiliate

“Montrose 9,” Arrested for Blockading Spectra Energy’s AIM Pipeline, Sentenced Today: “We will continue this fight.”

Cortlandt, NY — On Friday, Cortlandt Town Court Judge Daniel McCarthy issued sentences for nine New York residents and activists that were arrested for blocking access to a Spectra Energy construction yard (known as the “Montrose 9”). Each of the nine of the defendants were fined and sentenced to community service. The defendants had pled the “Necessity Defense,” arguing that their activity was justified because it was done to stop a danger more harmful than the violation of the law, and only after all other legal and regulatory options had been exhausted. The danger they oppose is Spectra’s “AIM” Pipeline, a high-pressure 42-inch gas pipeline that runs within 105 feet of critical Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant safety facilities. Even though Judge Daniel Murphy ultimately rejected this argument, it is groundbreaking for the necessity defense to be considered, and the community stands with the “Montrose 9.” The defendants’ lawyer, Martin Stolar, has filed an appeal with the appellate division of Westchester’s Supreme Court.

>>CLICK HERE TO SEE MORE PHOTOS<<

Despite their sentencing, the activists vowed that the fight is not over and that the resistance movement will continue. As “Montrose 9” defendant Linda Snider stated, “It‘s difficult for me to think of myself as ‘guilty’ when I was trying to stop a possible catastrophe. The first part of the Spectra pipeline is now in place and running under the Hudson, right next to a proposed oil barge anchorage site and Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant in Tompkins Cove. What could go wrong?  The huge outcry against this and other pipelines lead me to believe that the entire Spectra pipeline will, in the end, never get completed.” Defendant Susan Rutman agreed, stating: “Our communities need champions to protect the citizens, not punish those of us who are taking action and standing up to try to prevent a Fukushima-on-the-Hudson catastrophe. It is with a very sad heart that I stand before you to be sentenced.”

By completing the AIM Pipeline, Spectra Energy has only completed one-third of their overall pipeline expansion project – the “Algonquin” Pipeline Expansion. This is really one pipeline project disguised as three pipelines in order to illegally circumvent Spectra Energy’s obligation to identify cumulative impacts of the project as a whole. So while the AIM battle is over, the Montrose 9 voiced their commitment to winning the overall war in court on Friday.

Defendant Monica Hunken stated to the Judge, “Although we have been found guilty, it will not deter us from continuing to peacefully fight the next two segments of the Spectra pipeline every inch of the way. Whatever punishment we receive is a small price to pay for defending the land, air, water and our precious communities...We are here doing our job, being shepherds of the land. We cannot allow corporations to treat us like we are sacrifice zones. I am doing this for you and your family too."

The “AIM” pipeline has been opposed by local residents, countless local officials, Governor Cuomo, Senator Schumer and Senator Gillibrand, as well as riddled with corruption exposés and conflicts of interest. On February 29, 2016, New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo called for an immediate halt to construction while the state conducts an independent risk assessment; the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) denied the Governor’s request. On August 3, 2016, both New York Senators Schumer and Gillibrand wrote to FERC, calling for an immediate halt to construction of the pipeline; FERC also denied the Senators’ request. In November 2016, it was revealed publicly that Phil Suter, the spouse of high-ranking FERC official Maggie Suter – who led the review for two gas pipeline projects by Spectra Energy – is a paid consultant for Spectra on a related pipeline project. Without further regulatory action or support from elected officials, residents and advocates have taken matters into their own hands to directly stop construction. Defendant Mike Bucci questioned the Judge’s legal understanding of the protest, asking “All of the pieces of government have failed us, and now the judicial system has failed us. Where do we go for protection?"

Although gas began running through the AIM Pipeline in the beginning of the year, Spectra Energy still needs to complete its Atlantic Bridge and Access Northeast projects for the project to be financially viable. Resist Spectra and its allies across the northeast will oppose Spectra Energy’s reckless, toxic and destructive plans at every stage. These pipelines and their supporting infrastructures put our lives, communities, and the ecosystems on which we depend at risk. As defendant Kathleen Thomas stated in court to Judge McCarthy today, “The response to our plea has to do with the word ‘imminent’. When the real danger is imminent, it will be too late. Once this becomes imminent, we are all gone. There will be no chance to say ‘I told you so’." By working in solidarity with similar fights across the nation, we will stop Spectra once and for all.

Foreclosure victims and activists stormed Goldman Sachs’ lobby in New York to protest their growing influence on the Capitol Hill following key Trump’s appointments

New York, NY— Today, around 40 activists and victims of the foreclosure crisis took over Goldman Sachs lobby to protest the banks’ growing influence on the United States Government. The activists were met with a disproportionate use of force against the activists and a photographer with a press badge. NYPD officers and Goldman’s private security groped, pushed and choked some participants who were peacefully protesting at Goldman Sachs.

Under the banner #GovernmentSachs participants chanted and called out Government Sachs for its role in the foreclosure crisis and the extraction of wealth from low-income and middle-income families across America.

The protest at Goldman Sachs’ headquarters, the first at Goldman since Trump’s appointments, is part of a growing resistance against the Trump administration and his appointees, many of whom come directly from Goldman Sachs.

Activists called out Goldman for the disproportionate use of force and announced an encampment leading up to inauguration on January 17th.

“I got pushed and shoved for calling for a meeting with Donald Trump at Goldman Sachs. My friend was choked, that is unacceptable,” said Jean Sassine, a Queens resident at the lobby takeover. “ I lost my job and almost lost my home due to the foreclosure crisis that was created by Goldman executives. We can’t back down now. We’ll be back on January 17th at Goldman Sachs and take over their offices until they end this heinous takeover of our government.”

Activists announced they will be back at Goldman Sachs on January 17th and until inauguration.

The Brooklyn Anti-gentrification Network (BAN) protest at the New York City Department of City Planning Urban Design Division

Brooklyn Anti-gentrification Network (BAN) statement:

The Department of City Planning plays a central but often hidden role in the gentrification of our communities. Their job is to subdue community resistance by engaging us in a drawn out, complex and ultimately pointless community planning process that distracts and consumes community organizations and individuals with busy-work.

In order to move forward with a rezoning, the Department of City Planning must meet with the community to get their input, but they are not required to incorporate any of that input into the final plan. When they do take community input, it’s often window-dressing: a narrow range of details that don’t affect their bottom line. The decision to upzone in the first place is never put to the community, and the real needs and demands of the community are never met. We are told they are ‘not feasible’ or are ‘beyond the scope’ of their department’s work.

They play a game of divide and conquer: tokenizing community groups by picking one or two that are willing to work with them and holding them up as proof that their process to gentrify the neighbohood is legitimate and desired by the community. Any groups that refuse to engage in this ‘planning process’ are then dismissed as unreasonable and unnecessary.

They are sent into communities to give the illusion of community participation. This fake engagement is patronizing and insulting and is part of a long legacy of racist, sexist and classist government strategies to ‘deal’ with poor communities and communities of color. They attempt to demobilize our communities by pulling us into ‘community processes’ where we don’t have real power and which we never asked for in the first place. Ultimately they ignore the community concerns they spent months ‘listening’ to, and couch their predetermined plans within lengthy, inaccessible reports.

DCP is the ambassador of gentrification, brought in to disarm us and clear a path for the developers. Our most recent protest on Dec 18th against Alicia Glen sought to make visible her power as the deputy mayor for housing and economic development. Both she and staff of the DCP work together in an interconnected web to support real estate interests and halt conversations about solving the city's housing market through non-market based solutions.
