New York, NY - Hundreds of New Yorkers gathered in Washington Square Park on December 7, 2017, to stand up against Trump’s regressive policies on immigrants and working people and demand action  against the Muslim Ban and the Tax Scam, and stand for a Clean DREAM Act.

* On Monday the SCOTUS decided to allow Trump's Muslim Ban to move forward.

* Last Friday the U.S. Senate passed a Tax Scam that will devastate poor people, increase taxes on the working class, and give tax cuts to the 1%.

* Since October 5, 2017, over 10,000 DACA recipients have lost their protections to work and live legally, putting them at risk for deportation.

The New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC), MPower Change, Strong Economy for All, and partner organizations held the rally in Washington Square Park followed by a march to 26 Federal Plaza in protest against U.S. Supreme Court’s stay on the Muslim Ban, GOP Tax Bill, and for Congress to pass a clean DREAM Act before the budget.

The NYIC has been leading the fight against the Muslim Ban since January when the first Executive Order came out, with the #NoBanJFK movement, and assisting travelers from over 20 countries and organizing hundreds of lawyers and volunteers. The protests at JFK sparked actions across the nation, including a rally held in Battery Park the next day, which drew over 30,000 people. In July, the NYIC was back out at JFK to monitor the situation and provide legal assistance if necessary. On September 24, the third iteration of the travel ban included Chad, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Syria, Venezuela, Yemen, Somalia, six out of the eight countries are Muslim-majority nations. On October 17th, two federal judges issued temporary halts to the ban, but on December 4th, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down these injunctions to allow full enforcement of Trump’s Muslim Ban.

The Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act would serve as a permanent solution for those who currently qualify for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), including the 42,000 DACA recipients in New York whose status is at risk. Three months ago, President Trump rescinded DACA and the administration and congressional Republican leaders are attempting to make increased border protections (including “the Wall”) a condition of any future bill.

On November 16th, the U.S. House of Representatives passed their version of the tax reform bill that would drive up the federal deficit, open the door to massive cuts to Medicare and Medicaid, increase child poverty, repeal the individual mandate, make the rich richer, and favor corporations. On December 1st, the Senate passed the Tax Cut and Jobs Act, their version of the bill, which will cost $1.414 billion to the US economy over the next decade and kills local and state tax deductions.

The New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC) is an umbrella policy and advocacy organization for more than 200 groups in New York State. We envision a New York state that is stronger because all people are welcome, treated fairly, and given the chance to pursue their dreams. Our mission is to unite immigrants, members, & allies so all New Yorkers can thrive. We represent the collective interests of New York's diverse immigrant communities and organizations and devise solutions to advance them; advocate for laws, policies, and programs that lead to justice and opportunity for all immigrant groups; and build the power of immigrants and the organizations that serve them to ensure their sustainability, to improve people's lives, and to strengthen our state.

Public Defenders and Community Organizations Hold Rally Calling for ICE to be Prohibited From Entering NY Courts

Brooklyn, NY – The Association of Legal Aid Attorneys - UAW Local 2325 (ALAA), along with dozens of unions, immigrant rights organizations, and community groups held a rally on December 7, 2017 at Brooklyn Borough Hall to call on the Office of Court Administration (OCA) and Chief Judge Janet DiFiore to immediately implement a policy to prohibit Immigration & Customs Enforcement agents from entering state courthouses, and to end coordination with ICE.  Enacting these policies would help solidify New York City and New York State’s “Sanctuary” status and make sure that our courthouses are places of justice rather than fear.

>>CLICK HERE TO SEE MORE PHOTOS<<

This rally comes on the heels of a spontaneous walk-out and protest of public defenders in Brooklyn on November 28th, after a client of the Legal Aid Society was detained by ICE during a regular court appearance.  Public defenders have declared their continued commitment to protect their immigrant clients’ rights both in their communities and in the courtroom.  The regular presence of ICE in state courthouses deters immigrant community members from accessing due process and justice.  By allowing ICE presence, OCA is exacerbating the already devastating effects of the Trump Administration’s aggressive anti-immigrant policies.

Public defenders hope to increase pressure on OCA to implement this policy by bringing together a broad alliance of public defenders, legal services groups, community & immigrant organizations, and elected officials, all united behind the demand to keep ICE out of courthouses.

Deborah Wright

“Our members work day in and day out to zealously represent people from the most marginalized communities in New York City despite the numerous odds stacked against them” said Deborah Wright, President of the Association of Legal Aid Attorneys. “This sustained attack by ICE, and OCA’s complicity in aiding them, is just one more unnecessary burden for our clients and members to face.  ICE has no place in the Courthouses of a Sanctuary City and OCA must immediately implement rules to prohibit their entry.”

“The issue of immigration affects us all.  The climate being created in this country is unacceptable and we should consistently make clear that we won’t stand for this dehumanization and deprivation of basic human rights” said Jane-Roberte Sampeur, Attorneys of Color at Legal Aid Representative. “ICE has no place in criminal courts.  We want to make clear that we will not normalize this behavior and will stand together to protect our immigrant communities.”

"As we fight back against out-of-control immigration enforcement that tears our communities apart and ruins New Yorkers' lives, we are outraged that ICE is using heinous practices of detaining people inside and outside of courthouses. This practice creates mistrust with the court and puts family members, neighbors, and loved ones at risk” said Luba Cortés of Make the Road NY.  “We demand a clear policy to evict ICE from courthouses in New York State. We have seen first hand the effects of ICE's presence in and around the courts, and we refuse to see the lives of the people that we love continue to be destroyed by it."

“We can warm our homes without warming the planet!” Rally for Renewable Heat in Albany calls for swift transition off oil and gas and for New York to ramp up investment in heat pumps to reach climate goals

>>CLICK HERE TO SEE MORE PHOTOS<<

PLEASE CONSIDER SUPPORTING MY WORK

Albany, NY — As lake effect snow hit parts of Upstate NY on Wednesday, supporters of renewable heat gathered in New York’s Capitol Building on December 6, 2017; to demonstrate their support for renewable heating. Homeowners, energy activists, and installers called on Governor Cuomo and New York State to aggressively ramp up support for renewable heating technologies, such as ground-source (geothermal) and air-source heat pumps, in order to reduce New York’s dependence on fossil fuels and meet New York’s greenhouse gas reduction goals.

>>CLICK HERE TO SEE MORE PHOTOS<<

“Momentum and excitement are building as people across New York learn about alternatives to heat their homes without oil, gas, and other fossil fuels,” said Jessica Azulay of Alliance for a Green Economy. “All over the state, people are looking for ways to save money and protect our climate, and they are looking to Governor Cuomo to continue to enact game-changing policies that will make heat pumps affordable and available for all.”

The Renewable Heat Now campaign has already seen successes, as the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) this year announced $15 million in rebates for geothermal system installations and $10.95 million in incentives for air source heat pumps. On November 29, 2017 Governor Cuomo signed a bill that allows geothermal to qualify for on-bill financing, allowing homeowners to pay for the installation of their systems over time through their energy bill. This allows many homeowners to see immediate cost savings due to the efficiency of the new systems.

>>CLICK HERE TO SEE MORE PHOTOS<<

“Moving New York towards a renewable future requires innovative developments in clean energy,” said Assemblywoman Patricia Fahy (D-Albany), who voted for the bill. “I’m proud to be a voice in New York supporting geothermal energy as an important component in meeting our ambitious emission reduction goals.”

Over 38% of NY’s greenhouse gas emissions come from combustion of fossil fuels in our buildings, mostly for heating. Physicians, Scientists, and Engineers for Healthy Energy estimate that in order to achieve NY’s goal of a 40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, 126,000 buildings per year must convert from fossil fuels -- including natural gas and oil -- to efficient electric heat pump systems.

>>CLICK HERE TO SEE MORE PHOTOS<<

“Any heating and cooling contractor currently operating in NYS has an opportunity grow their business in the transition to heat pumps,” said John Ciovacco, President of Aztech Geothermal. “The sheer volume of conversions needed will spur significant job creation for local installers, plus attract equipment manufactures and finance companies to support the growth.”

Efficient electric heat pumps are commonly known and used in other states for heating and cooling needs. New Yorkers who move south are often astonished to find how cheaply, safely, and comfortably they can regulate the temperature in their homes with heat pumps. Geothermal systems are the most efficient way to heat and cool buildings in New York and are a complete alternative to burning fossil fuels. Cold climate air source heat pumps are also a good alternative for many buildings. Lack of knowledge of these alternatives, however, results in over 90% of NY homes still relying on combustion heat from gas, oil, and propane.

“We should not be investing our money in fossil-fuel infrastructure that will soon be obsolete,” said Irene Weiser, Coordinator of Fossil Free Tompkins and Town of Caroline Councilmember. “Instead we should invest in the infrastructure of the future - energy efficiency and heat pumps."

“We also need to reverse New York’s current gas expansion policy, which incentivizes utilities and customers to convert households from fuel oil to gas,” noted Aaron Mair, former President of the Sierra Club. “The technologies to achieve these goals are available today, and we cannot afford to wait.”

>>CLICK HERE TO SEE MORE PHOTOS<<

“Without swift and dramatic action from Governor Cuomo and other leaders, we face nothing less than climate catastrophe,” said Laura Shindell, New York Organizer for Food and Water Watch.

The Renewable Heat Now campaign launched in 2017 to help educate New Yorkers and advocate for incentives and policies to promote this transition. The campaign’s educational talks by experts Dr. Arjun Makhijani and Jay Egg have drawn crowds all over the state, from curious homeowners and architects to energy activists. The campaign’s platform calls for updated building codes to eliminate fossil fuel heating in new construction, rebates and incentives to promote installation of heat pumps, and policies and assistance especially for low-income homeowners to afford the initial investment in equipment.

“We are calling on Governor Cuomo to open a request for proposals so that engineers that are learned in geothermal technologies can implement practicable solutions for the proposed Sheridan Ave. Project, to supply renewable energy for the Empire State Plaza and other buildings. New York State can be a national model for sustainable energy,” said Merton D. Simpson, Albany County Legislator and Co-Chair of SHARE.

“Geothermal provides all of the heating and cooling needs for millions of commercial and residential buildings worldwide,” observed geothermal expert Jay Egg, who taught Renewable Heating and Cooling workshops across the state this fall as part of the Renewable Heat Now campaign. In November he penned a critique of the New York Power Authority’s dismissal of geothermal as a viable option for the Empire State Plaza, and met with Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan. “Let’s help Empire State Plaza lead the way for New York and become a geothermal beacon for the Empire State."

Rally speakers also proposed alternatives to New York State’s plans to run the Empire State Plaza on a combined heat and power plant burning fracked gas.

CUNY Professors Kick Off Contract Campaign for Fair Salaries, Quality Education

>>CLICK HERE TO SEE MORE PHOTOS<<

PLEASE CONSIDER SUPPORTING MY WORK

New York, NY — With their union contract four days expired, hundreds of CUNY faculty and staff represented by the Professional Staff Congress kicked off an energetic contract campaign tonight in midtown. The kick-off—a press conference, rallies at two CUNY campuses, disruptions of the CUNY Board of Trustees meeting, a lighted march, and a 25-foot light-up sign—pressed the CUNY trustees to negotiate an agreement that protects CUNY quality and helps students to succeed.

>>CLICK HERE TO SEE MORE PHOTOS<<

To win a strong contract – including especially the 7k minimum per course for adjuncts that we all know is vital to bring many PSC members above poverty wages – we need to ramp up the pressure on CUNY management and Cuomo's political appointees on the Board of Trustees.

Standing with community groups, other union leaders, elected officials and CUNY students, PSC President Barbara Bowen explained that a good contract for CUNY faculty and staff is good for all New Yorkers.

“There would be no New York without CUNY. CUNY is the single most successful university in the country in enabling poor and working-class graduates to achieve long-term economic security. Yet leading professors consistently turn down positions at CUNY and many current professors leave because the salaries are so uncompetitive. CUNY faculty salaries are significantly lower than those at Rutgers, Stony Brook, Fordham and Pace University. The most damaging result of planned underinvestment in CUNY is the University’s reliance on grossly underpaid part-time faculty, ‘adjuncts,’ to teach more than half of the courses. It’s time for the CUNY trustees to provide decent salaries at CUNY; anything less is an admission that the education—and the future—of New York’s working people and their families does not matter,” Barbara Bowen said.

>>CLICK HERE TO SEE MORE PHOTOS<<

PSC members won raises and back pay in their last contract after a six-year struggle and a strike authorization vote. But CUNY’s full-time faculty are still underpaid compared to faculty at comparable institutions and CUNY adjuncts still earn near-poverty wages. Academic staff, whom students count on in counseling and administrative offices, libraries and labs, are overworked and underpaid. As a result, CUNY struggles to recruit and retain the leading staff and faculty its 500,000 students deserve. Student success and graduation rates suffer.

To keep the best faculty and staff working at CUNY where New Yorkers need them, the PSC is demanding competitive salaries for all and significant increases for part-time faculty—to $7,000 per course. Improvements to students’ learning conditions, better job security, and protection of academic integrity and faculty rights in online education are also part of the PSC bargaining agenda.

>>CLICK HERE TO SEE MORE PHOTOS<<

All of New York has a stake in the success of CUNY students. Elected officials, labor leaders and community leaders who represent and serve New Yorkers who depend on CUNY showed their support. "For New York to remain on top tomorrow, we need to ensure CUNY thrives today. That's why every faculty and staff member deserves a fair contract, with fair wages. It will help ensure CUNY delivers best-in-class offerings with the best staff anywhere. And it's the right thing to do," said New York City Comptroller Scott M. Stringer.

“The key element in Higher Education success is the ability of students to get the courses they want and need with a full-time professor available to them for follow-up and mentoring. Without proper state support, the quality education we’ve worked hard to ensure will erode along with our promises to this generation of future leaders,” said Assemblymember Deborah J. Glick, chair of the Higher Education Committee.

>>CLICK HERE TO SEE MORE PHOTOS<<

"CUNY's faculty and staff are among the best in the world, and the quality education they provide to New York City's students helps prepare them to take their place in a global workforce. These workers have continued to provide this quality education despite being compensated at levels much lower than comparable positions at other local colleges and universities. The New York City Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO is proud to stand with the Professional Staff Congress as it heads to the bargaining table to help secure the wages and benefits needed for its members to live with dignity in our city," said Vincent Alvarez, President of the New York City Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO.

"We are calling on CUNY's administration to give PSC workers a strong wage increase as soon as possible. These members of this union are teachers to our children and play a large role in fostering the next generation of New York City leaders. We owe it to them to recognize their work appropriately. The last negotiation took an unconscionable six years to settle. There is no excuse for this to happen again and we will not accept threats of tuition increases as a ploy to pit workers against students. Rather than repeat the failed strategy of holding workers' families and finances hostage, CUNY should negotiate in good faith so that these dedicated employees can plan for their futures with peace of mind. All union workers deserve on-time contracts, and we are proud to support our brothers and sisters in negotiating for the wages and benefits they have rightfully earned," said Harry Nespoli, president of the Uniformed Sanitationmen's Association (Local 831) and chair of the NYC Municipal Labor Committee.

>>CLICK HERE TO SEE MORE PHOTOS<<

"DC37 members stand in solidarity with our PSC sisters and brothers and all the hardworking men and women at CUNY who provide the environment that makes CUNY one of the finest public university systems the nation,” said Henry Garrido, executive director, District Council 37.

"For decades, the state has disinvested in the CUNY system, resulting in inadequate wages and poor working conditions for staff and faculty. WFP stands with the members of the Professional Staff Congress as they enter negotiations for just wages, benefits and better working conditions that will allow staff and faculty to provide the affordable, world-class education CUNY students rightfully deserve,” said Bill Lipton, New York State director, Working Families Party.

>>CLICK HERE TO SEE MORE PHOTOS<<

“CUNY is the backbone of higher education in our communities. Low-income communities of color depend on CUNY for a high quality, affordable education. To maintain a high-quality staff and faculty, we need competitive wages and salaries. And we need to ensure that part-time staff are paid a living wage in one of the most expensive cities in America. In order to protect CUNY as a lifeblood for our communities, we need to protect its most precious resource, the staff,” said Jonathan Westin, executive director, New York Communities for Change.

"The University Student Senate stands in solidarity with the faculty and staff of CUNY. The Professional Staff Congress is leading the cause, and a win for them is a win for the 500,000 students within the CUNY system. Students count on the University as a vehicle for upward mobility, a means to a better life. And students deserve access to the leading faculty and staff in their perspective fields. A quality education can only come from a University that is willing to invest in its facility and staff. We ask the University to negotiate a fully funded contract that ensures quality and good learning conditions for us as students and fair pay for faculty and staff, including adjuncts,” said Yssed David Tobo, Vice Chair of Legislative Affairs, University Student Senate, CUNY.

>>CLICK HERE TO SEE MORE PHOTOS<<

"Working people across the city, including RAP members, see a CUNY education as the means to create better opportunities and a better future for themselves and their families. Insuring the quality of CUNY education is a must. We stand with the PSC because professors, both tenured and adjunct, deserve a fair contract that allows them to provide the quality education that working New Yorkers need. When we stand with the PSC for a fair contract we're not just standing with the union and the professors; we are standing with New York's working families," said Phil Andrews, Retail Action Project (RAP).

“As the parent of a current CUNY student and a longtime advocate for public education, I see firsthand the disinvestment Albany has chosen to make in our public institutions. To add insult to injury, CUNY faculty and staff are severely underpaid and, as a result, the University is unable to recruit and retain staff. As they work tirelessly to provide a high quality higher education to the neediest students in our communities, we too must demand that CUNY faculty and staff get a fair contract. We must provide a quality education for the New Yorkers who depend on CUNY,” said Zakiyah Ansari, advocacy director, Alliance for Quality Education.

The Professional Staff Congress (NYSUT, AFT #2334) represents almost 30,000 full- and part-time faculty and staff at the City University of New York. PSC members educate hundreds of thousands of mostly low-income New Yorkers, the majority from communities of color.

Other schools participating in the march are:
- Nelson Mandela School For Social Change
- Urban Assembly for Applied Math & Science
- Schomburg Research Center in Black Culture Junior Scholars Program

Last year, for the first Future of the City March, hundreds of people came together on the first Saturday in December to demonstrate against police brutality, and protest the shooting of Deborah Danner, a 66-year-old mentally ill black woman from the Bronx community. Danner was killed by a New York City police officer in her home in October 2016. The march also coincides with the grand jury failure to indict the police officer who choked Eric Garner to death on Staten Island in 2014.

Students have seen and experienced firsthand the ways people of color are affected by police brutality and systemic racism. Last year at this time, students were moved by the death of Deborah Danner, a 66-year-old mentally ill black woman from their community who was shot by police in her home. Her death inspired students to act last year, to work with teachers and community activists to plan the first Future of the City March.

South Bronx Community Charter High School focuses heavily on community engagement and social actions. Students are leading the march as part of their civic engagement and project-based learning experiences, with help from local activists in their community.

“It’s a culmination of their civic engagement learning project -- a year spent studying activism and involvement on issues impacting our community,” said Mario Benabe, a STEM educator at the South Bronx Community Charter High School.
