To Combat Trump on Climate Change, Advocates and NYC Council Members Push to Require Dirty Buildings to Clean Up Their Act

New York, NY— As President, Trump is the Climate Change Denier-in-Chief, and his administration in Washington is set to implement policies that will expose New York City to greater environmental threats and risks.
To combat Trump on climate change, a number of advocates and New York City Council Members gathered at City Hall today to call for a new requirement of energy efficiency upgrades at large buildings in the five boroughs.
As a whole, large buildings are the single biggest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions in NYC.
Requiring them to become more energy efficient can help the city achieve Mayor de Blasio’s goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions 80% by the year 2050. At the same time, this process will create thousands of good-paying jobs and economic opportunities for New Yorkers.
Participants in today’s news event at City Hall included members of the Climate Works for All coalition, which includes climate justice advocates, labor unions and community groups; and New York City Council Members including: Donovan Richards; Benjamin Kallos; Barry Grodenchik; Carlos Menchaca; Brad Lander; Alan Meisel; Rafael Espinal; Deborah Rose; Dan Garodnick; Mark Levine; Ydanis Rodriguez; Inez Barron; Margaret Chin.
“We cannot let Trump dictate climate policy. In our city, the growing resistance to Trump's agenda should include a robust commitment to requiring that the dirtiest buildings clean up their act, and help create a sustainable future for all New Yorkers,” said Daisy Chung, Campaign Director at ALIGN, who coordinates the Climate Works for All coalition.
“Upgrading the efficiency standards of our buildings is a modest step we can take today that will pay significant dividends in the years to come. We can create twenty-first century jobs while giving the next generation a strong, economically vibrant, sustainable city,” said New York City Council Member Deborah Rose.
"Climate change is real, and environmental sustainability must be our top priority. Given the current negative attitude toward climate change at the national level, our city must act now to protect our environment, safeguard our future and create jobs in the process. I stand with Climate Works for All in their effort to pollution by upgrading buildings and creating thousands of good-paying jobs,” said New York City Council Member Espinal.
“Fighting climate change while generating good paying jobs is government at its best,” said Council Member Dan Garodnick, Chair of the Committee on Economic Development. “I urge the mayor to get a head start on his jobs plan by committing today to the environment, to workers, and to Climate Works For All.”
