Black Lives Matter and NYC’s Jewish Community to “march with a purpose” for Ramarley Graham on the anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.

New York - Over a hundred people joined Ramarley Graham’s family; other families of those killed by the police; members of the Justice Committee; Jews for Racial & Economic Justice (JFREJ); Black, Jewish leaders and other Jews of Color; Jewish New Yorkers from across the five boroughs; and Black Lives Matter-NY at Grand Central station, Grand Atrium for a public action and vigil in conjunction with Beyond The Moment’s National Day of Action on April 4, 2017; followed by a march through midtown Manhattan to demand from the Mayor and the NYPD commissioner more accountability in the Ramarley Graham case and an end to Broken Windows Policing in NYC
Over five years ago, then NYPD officer Richard Haste shot and killed unarmed 18-year-old Ramarley Graham in front of his grandmother and 6-year-old brother in their home. NYPD officers later reported- in continuing their criminalization of communities of color through broken windows policing- that they had initially trailed Ramarley for "walking with a purpose."
Days ago, Mayor de Blasio allowed Richard Haste to resign after it became clear that the Rosemary Maldonado, the Deputy Commission of Trials for the NYPD, was going to recommend he be fired. All of the other officers involved in the shooting are still employed by the NYPD.
It is another slap in the face to Ramarley's family. Ramarley Graham's family deserves for the remaining officers charged in his killing – Sergeant Scott Morris & Officer John McLoughlin-- to be fired.
Jewish People of Color stand with Ramarley Graham’s family in their demands for the NYPD and Mayor de Blasio:
* Fire Sgt. Morris and Officer McCloughlin, the only two officers who are currently scheduled to have departmental trials via the NYPD.
* Fire the remaining officers on the force who were involved in assaulting Ramarley's family, denying his grandmother access to an attorney, and losing Ramarley's body for days after his passing.
* Publicly release Rosemary Maldonado's full report from Officer Haste’s disciplinary trial.
This action is part of Beyond the Moment’s national day of action, commemorating the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., which took place exactly one year after his landmark “Beyond Vietnam” speech. We walk in Dr. King’s footsteps, uplifting his analysis of the linkages between racism and militarism, and confronting the “fierce urgency of now.”
