Rally outside Fundamental Financial Advisors offices in Manhattan to condemn worker mistreatment at the
El San Juan Hotel in Puerto Rico

New York — Workers from the New York Hotel & Motel Trades Council organized a protest on Tuesday, April 11th, 2017; against Fundamental Financial Advisors, an owner of the El San Juan Hotel, for the mistreatment and exploitation of hotel workers in Puerto Rico. On Monday, Fundamental Financial Advisors, an American hedge fund that has been taking advantage of the Puerto Rican debt crisis, was grossly mistreating workers at the El San Juan Hotel - replacing long-time female employees with scantily-dressed and inexperienced younger women who are told not to wear underwear, changing work schedules on a whim, not offering workers fair wages and benefits and refusing to negotiate a fair labor contract. New York officials have joined in the effort to condemn  Fundamental and demand that they bargain in good faith, and provide workers with fair wages and benefits.

The hotel union has accused the owners of the El San Juan Hotel in Carolina, Puerto Rico, of bargaining in bad faith. One of the hotel’s owners is Fundamental Advisors, an American hedge fund that also has a stake in Puerto Rico’s crippling debt crisis.

Meanwhile, the union is asking customers to boycott the hotel, which in the past has hosted the annual November Somos conference made up of Hispanic elected officials and other leaders.

The hotel on its website bills itself as the “most authentic luxury, lifestyle and entertainment property” on the Isla Verde Beach.

The hotel workers’ parent union is the influential New York Hotel and Motel Trades Council, which the past six weeks has had 12 of its members on the ground in Puerto Rico organizing the protests.
The union has also paid for a Spanish-language ad running in Puerto Rico. “Hotel San Juan is mistreating its workers,” a translation of the ad says. “Call the San Juan Hotel and tell them that our lives are worth more than their profits.”
