New York,  NY – A day after Trump’s brief visit to Puerto Rico, after which he said that the island’s debt should be “wiped out,” Puerto Ricans in New York whose families are suffering on the island after Hurricane Maria held a rally on October 4, 207 at Foley Square in Manhattan, to demand immediate and sufficient aid to relieve and rebuild Puerto Rico.

The rally is part of a day of action in 14 cities across the country to highlight the plight of 3.4 million US citizens in Puerto Rico who have no electricity and drinking water, face shortages in fuel and food and are dealing with severely crippled telecommunications. Washington must act now to prevent a more tragic situation.

The devastating damage that Hurricane Maria has brought to Puerto Rico has come on top of the storm caused by the public debt crisis and the recession that has made Puerto Rican families suffer for decades by cutting vital funds from the commonwealth’s infrastructure and leaving the fragile island especially vulnerable to hurricane like Maria.

Members of VAMOS4PR, a coalition of community, labor and civil rights organizations fighting for an economy fair for all Puerto Ricans, believe it’s immoral to insist that before Puerto Rican families can rebuild their homes, their hospitals, their schools and their roads, they must first pay back the banks.

The group, and its allies, call for effective action to prevent Puerto Rico’s $72 billion public debt from blocking Puerto Rico’s ability to survive Hurricane Maria and rebuild.
