BROOKLYN, NY - Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams organized a rally at the Prospect Park Bandshell in Park Slope following the National School Walkout on March 14, 2018; in the wake of the deadly mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, which resulted in the death of 17 students and teachers on Valentine’s Day.

Students at public schools throughout the city participated in the #Enough National School Walkout on March 14, 2018. The peaceful walkout took place at 10 AM and lasted for 17 minutes, in remembrance of the 17 students killed during the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. The student-led walkout is in protest against US Congress’s continued inaction on gun control.

Students are also leading the nationwide March for Our Lives on Saturday, March 24, to demand legislation that will protect children, students and others from mass murder and gun violence. Student survivors of the mass murder in Parkland have changed the national conversation on gun control. They have organized a march in Washington, and now similar marches are being organized throughout the country. Many PSC members and CUNY students are expected to attend the Washington march, and the PSC will organize a contingent for the march in New York City. Email PSC Organizing Director Deirdre Brill if you plan to attend. For the NYC march, we will meet at W. 74th St. and Central Park West at 10 AM on Saturday, March 24.

“We are in a unique period in our nation’s history,” said Borough President Adams. “The greatest experience in growth academically and personally is getting involved in a moment of change. Now is that moment. We must do something about guns, which are running rampant in this country, causing the death of so many of our young people in schools, on the streets, and in their houses of worship. This rally is just the beginning of a movement for national change on this critical issue.”

The rally, which came to fruition through feedback provided by young people who attended an emergency meeting held in the Community Room at Brooklyn Borough Hall on February 22, just days after the school shooting in Parkland, was held with support from Council Members Brad Lander and Jumaane D. Williams, State Senator Jesse Hamilton; Change.org; Everytown for Gun Safety, a non-profit organization that advocates for gun control and against gun violence across America; Gays Against Guns, an inclusive, non-violent direct action group of LGBTQ+ people committed to ending gun violence; Lay the Guns Down, a non-profit organization founded by advocate and community leader Michael Tucker, who lost his young son to gun violence, and The Healing Center New York, an empowerment organization that helps families affected by violence.
