New York City’s 2017 Student Voter Registration Day Will Register Thousands of Students During Important Municipal Election Year

New York - On March 16th, 2017; the New York Immigration Coalition, in partnership with the New York City Council, NYC Votes, the Board of Elections, and the New York City Department of Education, announced Student Voter Registration Day (SVRD) to be held on March 17th, 2017 in 60 high schools across New York City’s five boroughs.

SVRD is a one-day program designed to help New York City educate students on civic participation and register them to vote. With critical municipal elections happening later this year, SVRD aims to engage students to be active participants in our democracy. The program aim to register 10,000 students in 60 schools.

Council Member Helen Rosenthal said, “Today’s young people were fortunate to be born with the right to vote, regardless of race or gender. Our next challenge is to raise awareness of the value of voting and civic participation. Student Voter Registration Day gives students the opportunity to understand the impact they can make through civic participation - both in and out of the voting booth. I'm immensely proud to have sponsored the Resolution that calls for annual Student Voter Registration Days in New York City schools to boost youth civic engagement. Thank you to my colleagues on the City Council who supported this measure, the NYC Department of Education, the NYC Campaign Finance Board, the New York Immigration Coalition, and our supporter organizations for helping to make SVRD a success.”

Onida Coward Mayers, Director of Voter Assistance at the NYC Campaign Finance Board, said “Cultivating a culture of voting amongst our young people is the single greatest investment we can make in our democracy. Student Voter Registration Day is about getting young people excited about voting and starting them off on a path of engagement that will last a lifetime. They need to know that their vote is their voice and that they can shape their future and the future of their communities by making it heard at the ballot box."

Yolanda Torres, Executive Superintendent of the Division of Family and Community Engagement, The NYC Department of Education, said “This initiative had a great impact last year, educating and registering over 8,500 young New Yorkers to vote. This is a great program, and I thank Speaker Mark-Viverito, Council Woman Helen Rosenthal, and the City Council as well as our partners NYC Votes, the Board of Elections, and the New York Immigration Coalition. I thank schools for participating in Student Voter Registration Day tomorrow and registering eligible New York City students to vote. This program inspires and prepares students to become active members of their communities beyond election day… Your vote, and your voice, do matter.”

Council Member and Immigration Committee Chair Carlos Menchaca said, “Our City and our nation need young people to take leadership roles in civic life. Voting is the first step, and a most important one. I call on young voters to be actively engaged at school and in our communities. Your presence and your voices matter. When I work in City Council, at community boards, or on Participatory Budgeting, I always look for youth to provide new ideas. When they do, the results are better.”

Council Member Barry S. Grodenchik said, “New York City has consistently had low youth voter turnout. During the 2016 Presidential primaries, only fourteen percent of voters were between the ages of eighteen and twenty-nine. We need to encourage our students early on to be civically engaged. From tuition hikes to funding for school programs, there are a series of issues in our City that directly affect our youth. It is critical that we provide the necessary resources for students to get involved, starting with voting. Last year, we were able to register over four hundred students at Benjamin N. Cardozo High School and we are hoping to increase that number this year.”

James Hong, Interim Executive Director of the MinKwon Center for Community Action, said, "The MinKwon Center is excited to again participate in Student Voter Registration Day. The earlier a New Yorker can get into the habit of voting - and voting for their interests and in the interests of their community - the better. Ensuring that Asian Americans and other marginalized groups are heard in the electoral process is part of a strong democracy."

Ianna Hayes, 2017 NYC Youth Poet Laureate Program Ambassador, said “I have a message for young New Yorkers today! Voting matters. From the quality of our schools, to the resources in our public libraries, to criminal justice reform, when you vote local you are putting your mark on these issues and charting the future for your community. Embrace your power as a citizen to build a city that works for everyone! Today I want all of my fellow students to register and commit to voting in our the elections this fall."

Citywide Coalition of Faith Leaders block traffic in front of ICE center in NYC to call on Mayor De Blasio and demand deep protections for Immigrant and Refugee Community

New York City - Twenty-five New Yorkers from a citywide coalition of over 90 multi-faith congregations and 25 faith-based organizations knelt down to pray in front of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement holding center on Varick Street as hundreds stood by in support to call on the Mayor and the City Council to stop targeting immigrant and refugee New Yorkers and communities of color.

The group started with a rally at Washington Square Park representing Muslim, Christian, Jewish, and Hindu communities. Activists and faith leaders then called out New York as no sanctuary because of the latest federal immigration and travel ban, or “Muslim ban 2.0" as well as the local broken windows policing, and demanded city officials step up protections for local immigrant communities by providing additional funding to the New York Immigrant Family Unit Project, a program that provides legal counsel to low income immigrants in detention proceedings. Clergy and faith leaders also announced their network of houses of worship as “sanctuary congregations", or where immigrants fearing deportation can find refuge and support during immigration raids.
"New York will be a true sanctuary city when it prohibits ICE from conducting raids and picking up fathers and mothers who have only committed minor crimes. We know that if someone is only accused of a crime, their fingerprints are shared with the state and federal government. Because of this, we are calling on Mayor de Blasio to decriminalize low level offenses and fully fund legal representation for low income New Yorkers in deportation proceedings." said Pastor Rich Perez of Christ Crucified Fellowship.

“if we are to be a sanctuary, we cannot allow any form of ban on any people to be enforced in our city or airports. I am so proud of the brave judged who issued the Hawaii ruling. lt is the first step, but we must also stop surveillance and policing of Muslim New Yorkers, and allow all Americans and those seeking refuge to live and practice our faiths without fear," said Burema Naby Niambele, the co-executive director of the Muslim and Immigrant Coalition for Justice.

“As people of faith, we declared our congregation as a sanctuary to protect our members. We saw the fear that many are haunted by when they or their loved ones could be arbitrarily picked up by agents, so we did our part. Now l’m calling on Mayor de Blasio to do his part to protect our families by standing up against these efforts to take away the freedom to work and pray without fear," declared Minister Micah Bucey of Judson Memorial Church.

Hundreds of New Yorkers then marched through the West Village in song and chants, stopping at Stonewall to say prayers for the 6 trans women murdered in only the first 3 months of this year. The group then continued to 201 Varick, where community members from Faith in New York and their allied partner organizations have been recently held when awaiting deportation trials. 10 clergy members and 15 lay-leaders filed across the street hand in hand as prayers were said over them.

“There will be no silence until bowed heads are raised rather than pushed further into the dirt, no silence until the righteous are loved rather than mocked and vilified, no silence until the strangers in our midst are protected rather than hunted, chained, and whisked away never to be heard from again! Master of the universe, please grant these brave souls the ability to walk in your ways, to emulate you. May their act today be no longer necessary tomorrow, but if tomorrow comes and such actions remain necessary, Lord please give strength to us all that we may continue to do your will on earth," shared Rabbi Jonah Geffen of Congregation Shaare Zedek as he prayed over those blocking traffic.

Members were arrested and transported in NYPD vans to 1 Police Plaza, where they went through processing in song. The mood was joyous as two hours later, the faith leaders returned to their communities and returned home.
This event was part of the “Faith over Fear Week of Action," a series of demonstrations led by Faith In New York and allies fighting for immigration justice and other issues in the upcoming NYC local elections. They are calling on the Mayor and City Council to make NYC a true sanctuary city.

To Combat Trump on Climate Change, Advocates and NYC Council Members Push to Require Dirty Buildings to Clean Up Their Act

>>CLICK HERE TO SEE MORE PHOTOS<<

New York, NY— As President, Trump is the Climate Change Denier-in-Chief, and his administration in Washington is set to implement policies that will expose New York City to greater environmental threats and risks.

To combat Trump on climate change, a number of advocates and New York City Council Members gathered at City Hall today to call for a new requirement of energy efficiency upgrades at large buildings in the five boroughs.

As a whole, large buildings are the single biggest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions in NYC.

Requiring them to become more energy efficient can help the city achieve Mayor de Blasio’s goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions 80% by the year 2050. At the same time, this process will create thousands of good-paying jobs and economic opportunities for New Yorkers.

Participants in today’s news event at City Hall included members of the Climate Works for All coalition, which includes climate justice advocates, labor unions and community groups; and New York City Council Members including: Donovan Richards; Benjamin Kallos; Barry Grodenchik; Carlos Menchaca; Brad Lander; Alan Meisel; Rafael Espinal; Deborah Rose; Dan Garodnick; Mark Levine; Ydanis Rodriguez; Inez Barron; Margaret Chin.
“We cannot let Trump dictate climate policy. In our city, the growing resistance to Trump's agenda should include a robust commitment to requiring that the dirtiest buildings clean up their act, and help create a sustainable future for all New Yorkers,” said Daisy Chung, Campaign Director at ALIGN, who coordinates the Climate Works for All coalition.

“Upgrading the efficiency standards of our buildings is a modest step we can take today that will pay significant dividends in the years to come. We can create twenty-first century jobs while giving the next generation a strong, economically vibrant, sustainable city,” said New York City Council Member Deborah Rose.

"Climate change is real, and environmental sustainability must be our top priority. Given the current negative attitude toward climate change at the national level, our city must act now to protect our environment, safeguard our future and create jobs in the process. I stand with Climate Works for All in their effort to pollution by upgrading buildings and creating thousands of good-paying jobs,” said New York City Council Member Espinal.

“Fighting climate change while generating good paying jobs is government at its best,” said Council Member Dan Garodnick, Chair of the Committee on Economic Development. “I urge the mayor to get a head start on his jobs plan by committing today to the environment, to workers, and to Climate Works For All.”

The Puerto Rican Diaspora in the U.S. call for a protest action against the U.S. Fiscal Control Board to end Colonialism.
Independence for Puerto Rico Now!

On Monday, March 13, 2017; the U.S. Fiscal Control Board imposed by the dictatorial PROMESA LAW over our country by Washington and Wall Street, will held it’s 5th meeting at the Alexander Hamilton Federal Building in New York City. On the agenda of this meeting is the approval and imposition of a fiscal plan for Puerto Rico that calls for the implementation of draconian austerity measures such hospital closings, cuts of health services, massive school closings, elimination of retirement pensions, wage reductions, shorter work days, cuts to cultural institutions, elimination of Section 8 housing subsidies, housing taxes, etc.

In response, the people of Puerto Rico are presently continuing its heroic resistance to these attempts to attack and erode the standard of living and economic gains of workers and their families and the poor. In Puerto Rico resistance grows among women, students, trade unions and the environmental and agro-ecological movements as they take leadership in this struggle.

The Puerto Rican Diaspora in the U.S. is an integral part of this resistance. We, the militant pro-independence members and organizations of the Diaspora stand with our people, with our homeland Puerto Rico. We will continue to increase our actions of our peoples’ resistance and to challenge the empire here in the belly of the beast.

The undersigned organizations call for a protest action against the federal board dictatorship, to be held Monday, March 13, starting at 7:00 am, in front of the Alexander Hamilton Federal Building. We invite all participants of the resistance to bring our flags, drums and maracas, our slogans and songs of protest and struggle. As we raise our voices in protest, the convening organizations will be demanding:

1. An Immediate end to any immoral-illegal-odious debt payments.
2. Non-recognition of the Board of Directors
3. Immediate overturning and dismantling of all anti-labor laws and measures.
4. Non-recognition of debt
5. 10% tax on the capital gains of foreign corporations
6. Decolonization of Puerto Rico. Non-recognition of any jurisdiction of the US imperial government imposed on our country.
7. The creation of a Puerto Rican Provisional Congress of National Salvation with representatives of the Puerto Rican Bar Association, women’s, youth, student, trade union and professional organizations, such as university professors, teachers, other education workers, and the environmental and agro-ecological movements.

We make an urgent call to the international community to stay vigilant and to express its solidarity and to support the struggle of our people.

Rally and Civil Disobedience outside Governor Andrew Cuomo's NYC Office to support the Albany Can End Homelessness in New York State campaign

NEW YORK CITY - Hundreds rally outside Governor Andrew Cuomo's NYC Office on March 13, 2017; to support the Albany Can End Homelessness in New York State campaign, about a dozen faith and community leaders commited civil disobedience blocking third avenue with banners reading "Cuomo: The Nation is Watching" & "End Record Homelessness & Income Inequality" culminating on arrests made by the NYPD.

Citing NYS' record homelessness under Governor Cuomo, and worst income inequality in the nation, faith and community leaders denounce the Governor as fiscal conservative, not the national, progressive leader he claims to be. Speakers pointed to progressive tax policies as critical to resisting the Trump and GOP agenda and budget cuts that will impact New York State, and those already announced cutting NYCHA funding

A statewide coalition of faith and community organizations have led an unusually aggressive campaign during the state budget season calling on Governor Cuomo to tackle New York's record homeless crisis, and adopt three progressive tax policies. The specific tax policies would generate ample resources to end that State's historic homeless crisis, as well as to confront a myriad of other ills that have long plagued New York. As the state braces for the potential loss of billions of dollars in federal revenue brought by the Trump Administration and Congressional GOP, faith leaders and community groups have stressed the need for progressives revenue as ever more urgent.

The coalition has pointed to New York State's record high homelessness as a true indicator of the values of Governor Cuomo. While New York remains one of the richest in the nation - home to Wall Street, a multi-billion dollar real estate industry, and some of the world's wealthiest individuals - over 88,000 people sleep in shelters nightly. Faith leaders and community groups affirm that despite Governor Cuomo presenting himself as a progressive champion, the state's glaring income inequality illustrates the Governor's priorities and lack of commitment to truly address the needs of poor New Yorkers.

With over 88,000 people homeless across the state, New York is currently facing the worst homeless crisis on record. Between 2011 and 2015 the state’s homeless population increased by 41%. Read more about the coalition's platform to support progressive tax policies and end homelessness: Albany Can End Homelessness in New York State. Find additional information on New York State's homelessness in this 2016 report Rising Homelessness in New York State.

#GetOrganizedBK rally and DIE-IN at Brooklyn Borough Hall in defense of the Affordable Care Act

BROOKLYN, NY - The Activist group #GetOrganizedBK held a rally and DIE-IN on March 11, 2017 at the Brooklyn Borough Hall steps and plaza in defense of the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare after the GOP released their bill to gut the ACA, putting many Americans at serious health risks if the ACA is repealed or replaced with their plan. Patients and healthcare workers shared personal stories of the impact of the ACA. New York Elected Officials such as New York City Council Member Brad Lander, Borough President of Brooklyn Eric Adams and Congresswoman Nydia M. Velázquez expressed their support and joined the DIE-IN.

A trumpet player played "Taps" at the time members of #GetOrganizedBK, New York Elected Officials and concerned citizens took part on the DIE-IN at the Brooklyn Borough Hall plaza, laying on the ground and holding tombstones over their heads. The tombstones used in the DIE-IN convey human impact through such messages as, “Couldn’t afford 30% surcharge. RIP.” “Died from a Medicaid roll-back.” “RIP, tax benefit didn’t help me.” “RIP. Empty health savings account.” “Died from lack of health insurance.” “Killed by a preventable disease.” "Died. GOP plan helped the rich, not me."

On International Women’s Day, thousands of women and allies took the streets in New York to join the International Women’s Strike

NEW YORK CITY - To celebrate International Women’s Day, on March 8th, 2017; women and allies in New York join the International Women’s Strike, with rallies and marches organized by diverse groups who represent feminism for the 99%. Across the country, over fifty strike events are taking place in different cities alongside International Women’s Day events in over thirty countries.

The morning rally was held in Fifth Avenue, Midtown Manhattan outside Trump Tower followed by a march to Trump International hotel and Tower by Columbus Circle where Women's March organizers as Linda Sarsour and Carmen Perez among others got arrested in an act of Civil Disobedience.
The afternoon rally began at Washington Square Park (WSP) in Manhattan, featuring speakers from diverse groups who represent feminism for the 99%. Speakers include: Jamara Mychelle Wakefield of the Movement for Black Lives, Betty Lyons of the American Indian Law Alliance and an activist for Standing Rock, a speaker from the Red Umbrella Project for sex worker advocacy, Nour Obeidallah of Sanctuary Campus Campaign, and more.

At 5:30, a march go through Manhattan from WSP to Zuccotti Park, stopping at symbolic sites including the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory (now 23-29 Washington Place), Stonewall, the Varick Street Immigration Court, and the African Burial Ground National Monument on Duane Street.
Across the country, over fifty strike events are taking place in different cities. The day of action, abbreviated internationally as “8M,” will occur alongside International Women’s Day events in over thirty countries. Our strike draws inspiration from the massive strikes this fall in Argentina against femicide and in Poland against a total abortion ban.

Among the dozens of endorsers of the the event are the January 21st Women’s March committee who have called for “A Day Without A Woman” and the organizers of the February 2 bodega strike. The Socialist Party of New York City, a local of the Socialist Party, USA, is also organizing a rally in conjunction with the International Women’s Strike at Washington Square Arch.

Women who can not take the day off work will be wearing red to demonstrate their solidarity with the women’s strike. Because women’s work occurs at work and at home, we have suggested a variety of ways in which to strike, including striking from housework.

As a Feminist movement for 99%, the groups unconditionally condemn both this second Muslim ban and the Supreme Court's refusal to hear this major transgender rights case. The Feminist movement for 99% will mobilize in solidarity with all those who will suffer from hate crimes when join in solidarity in over 50 countries around the world on March 8th to strike. The Feminist movement for 99% say No Ban, No Wall! No discrimination against transgender people!

This March 8th marks the 108th annual International Working Women’s Day. In 1909, the Socialist Party of America, started International Working Women’s Day in honor of the International Ladies Garment Worker’s Union strike. It has since become an internationally recognized holiday.

This is a rally to demand the right to healthcare, childcare, eldercare and housing as foundation stones in building a genuinely just and safe society for all. The Socialist Party believes these aims can only be achieved by political activity independent of the two capitalist parties.

The International Women's Strike/US National Coordinating Group rejects the Trump administration’s racist attempts at yet another Muslim ban, as well as his call for a wall along the Mexico/US border.

The group recognizes and offers solidarity to all people: Sudanese, Syrian, Iranian, Libyan, Somalian, and Yemeni, Muslims who live in the United States and in every country, refugees and we stand in solidarity with immigrants with or without from Central, Latin America and the Caribbean region. The group offers solidarity and calls on an end of discrimination against our our trans, cis, and gender-queer sisters and brothers.

As with the Muslim ban's false justification of protecting the country, so too the Supreme Court's discriminatory decision perpetuates the violent and false narrative that denying trans people basic rights somehow protects cis people. The group rejects this attempt to divide us. All deserve the dignity, recognition, and respect repeatedly denied by a regime that preserves the rule of the 1% by dividing, silencing, ignoring, and scapegoating the already oppressed among us.
