Thousands participated in a rally at the Stonewall National Monument to protest Trump’s reversal of transgender student rights
New York - A coalition of over 50 LGBTQ rights organizations and New York Elected Officials held an emergency rally to oppose Trump attack on Trans Students at the Stonewall National Monument in New York City, on February 23, 2017; participating trans speakers and Government Officials made it clear that they will fight to keep protections for trans and gender non-conforming people and students in the aftermath of the Trump-Pence Administration rescinding important protections for transgender students in schools.
The President sided with Attorney General Jeff Sessions yesterday in rescinding the protections, which allowed transgender students to use the bathrooms of their choice, even though Education Secretary Betsy DeVos was in favor of keeping them.
Tonight’s rally is being sponsored by over 50 local LGBT-rights organizations and will feature appearances by Congressman Jerrold Nadler, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, New York Assemblymember Richard Gottfried, Council Member Carlos Menchaca, New York Assemblymember Linda B. Rosenthal and other public officials.
In New York City, officials are promising to stand by transgender people of all ages, and Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina said, "We are dedicated to ensuring every student is provided with a safe, supportive and inclusive learning environment."
New York City has had its own guidelines in place since 2014, stating that a “transgender student should not be required to use a locker room or restroom that conflicts with the student’s gender identity,” according to the Department of Education.
